What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi or Taijiquan is an ancient form of slow, smooth and rhythmic motion which began in China. Growing in popularity today, Tai Chi is often witnessed being practiced in public parks early in the morning when the air is at its freshest. Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as “meditation in movement”, “swimming in air” for how it appears. And with more medical studies being released on its benefits, it’s also now being referred to as “medication in motion.” (Harvard Women’s Health Watch, May 2009). It has also been the subject of numerous studies over the years for its many benefits in dealing with various health issues, such as Parkinson’s, for example. (New England Journal of Medicine, Feb 2012)
The many benefits are due to the fact that it is a very soft martial art, unlike karate, jiu jitsu, judo or any of the hard martial arts which rely on force and speed.
Tai Chi strengthens our internal energy, and allows it to flow more freely through the body. It is gentle and non-violent, though after much practice it can be an extremely effective form of self defense.
